A representative overlay image of fluorescent 2D-gels containing E-S proteins extracted from T. spiralis and T. britovi. The total amount of protein used for CyDye labeling was 50 μg. Protein spots appearing in purple or green refer to proteins that are more abundant in T. spiralis or in T. britovi (A) T. spiralis and T. britovi proteins labelled with Cy3 and Cy5, respectively. (B) T. spiralis and T. britovi proteins labelled with Cy5 and Cy3 respectively. Protein spots appearing in white represent E-S proteins from both species. The numbered protein spots, cut from the same gels post-stained with silver, were identified by LC-MS/MS and are listed in Additional file 1: Table S2.
