SL pericytes characterization. Flow cytometry analysis of cells obtained from the cochlear SL. The histograms show that 97.39% of the cells are negative for the expression of vWF, a validated marker for endothelial cells. Cells show positive expression for validated pericyte markers Desmin (68.4%), NG2 (48.2%), and α-SMA (84.1%). The detection of αSMA identifies pericytes from the SL, the only pericyte type in the microvasculature of the lateral wall to express the contractile protein. In the figure black histograms identify the unstained cells, blue histograms identify the isotype control and the red histograms identify the markers of interest
