Overview of fatty acid biosynthesis and regulation of key enzymes http://www.genome.jp/kegg/pathway/map/map00061.html. The starting reactant is acetyl-CoA. The principal reaction products of the fatty acid biosynthesis are straight-chain C16 and C18 fatty acids, which can be used in the synthesis and the repair of damaged phospholipid membranes. The resulting fatty acids are therefore important constituents of the cell membrane. The graphs to the right show the development of protein abundance during the time course experiment. The grey line corresponds to protein produced in bacteria grown in media without bovine bile, while the black line corresponds to bacteria grown in media containing 1% bovine bile. The x-axis indicates the time (minutes) and the y-axis the spot intensity (normalized raw spot volume) of the protein as a mean value of the parallels. The lines are drawn for illustration purposes only, connecting the three time points that were analyzed (20, 60 and 120 minutes).
